Working in close collaboration with a product designer client, a palette of subtle colours and natural materials has been prepared for the transformation of three stories residence in Tokyo.
Its simple composition helps to address the programmatic requirements for a modern lifestyle while maximising the use of natural light.
The main living floor area features a trapezoid kitchen island which doubles in function as both a counter and a dining table. This bespoke piece of furniture is made almost entirely of Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) and is designed to be durable and long lasting.
Qualities of the original character of the apartment have been uncovered and reinstated. The rough formwork of a cast-in-situ stair that was clearly not meant to be seen has become a new part of the new interior.
As–found details, together with an extensive use of wood throughout, define a calm and uncomplicated interior which quietly celebrates Japanese culture.
